It was the seventh of eight collaborations between Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. Viewing Experience
The film is notoriously inaccurate. It depicts Stuart and Custer as best friends in the same class (they actually graduated years apart) and takes a controversial, reactionary stance on the issue of slavery, often portraying abolitionists as "fanatics".
Despite its title, the movie has very little to do with the actual Santa Fe Trail. Instead, it serves as a fictionalized account of the events leading up to the American Civil War.
The story follows graduates of West Point, including J.E.B. Stuart (Flynn) and George Armstrong Custer (Reagan), as they are posted to "Bloody Kansas" to stop the militant abolitionist John Brown (Raymond Massey).
