The story begins with two fourteen-year-old boys, and Neckbone , who venture out to a remote island on the river. There, they discover a peculiar sight: a boat high up in the branches of a tree, left behind by a massive flood. Their wonder is cut short when they realize they aren’t alone. Living in the boat is a charismatic, enigmatic drifter named Mud (played by Matthew McConaughey).

The film culminates in a high-stakes shootout at Ellis’s houseboat. Mud is forced to choose between his own survival and protecting the boys who risked everything for him.
